Cambridge Product Management Network

A space for technology product management

So after the summer break, your self-appointed committee had a chat about what sessions we might look to sort out for this coming year. We've got some ideas, but we want to know what *you* want to hear about? And/or who you'd like to hear from?

Here are some suggestions to get you thinking, in no particular order.  Please let us know your favourite 3 topics, either from those listed here or from other suggestions; and if you have any thoughts on people to present on / lead a discussion on any topic of interest, please let us know as well.
------------------------------------------------
1) Product Management for FMCG

2) Product Management for websites

3) A joint event with the CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) in Cambridge
... but what topic would you like to see covered?

4) Making partnerships successful
At least two separate topics here: marketing / technology partnership, and channel partnerships.

5) Product Management recruitment
We could ask a recruitment consultant to talk to us about either / both of these two topics:
- How to recruit a product manager?
- How to get a job as a product manager?

6) Product Management tools & resources
Open mike session for people to tell what they use

7) How to price your products

8) Agile product definition and the product backlog
Roman Pichler has offered to run another session, to cover discovering, capturing and communicating requirements in an agile world together with managing the product backlog (including progressively decomposing requirements, prioritising items and refining them).

9) Running a beta program

10) Market sizing

11) Product budgeting

12) "Research Methods 101"
Some of the basics research techniques, and some traps / gotchas to avoid

13) You're the first ProdMgr for a product: what do you do in your first day / week / month / quarter?
Discuss each timescale in turn

Hi Colin,

I would be happy to present on research methods as it something I have been looking into recently.

My favourite 3 are:
2) Product Management for websites
8) Agile product definition and the product backlog
12) "Research Methods 101"
Hi Colin
Re (3), I've spoken with the local CIM branch (of which I'm a member), and they would be up for a possible shared event, if that would be of interest. Or did you mean getting a speaker from CIM central, which would require a higher-level approach altogether?

Tony, I was thinking of a joint event, with both camps bringing their views to the discussion; but personally I'd be interested in having a presentation by a speaker as well, if you thought someone at CIM would be motivated to do this

Hi Colin

Of the list above I prefer : 9) and 7)

I think other topics could include:

* Relation between Product Management and Product Marketing : this is a very flexible partition - what have folks found as best split ?

I also suggest, for a more informal evening, an Open Mike with 2 slides each on "My best and worst PM decisions" :)

HTH

Ed

And hopefully I will actually manage to attend some of the next meetings !
